The Big Island's Kilauea Crater erupted forty-five times in the twentieth century and its lava fountains earned it the nickname of "The Drive-By Volcano" since distant motorists could easily see the constant activity years ago. At least 189 structures have been destroyed by Kilauea's flows in the last fifteen years. It's not surprising that most Hawaiians believe that Kilauea Crater is where Pele, the legendary Hawaiian volcano goddess, resides.
