South Point, Hawaii is so named because it's the southernmost point in Hawaii, which also makes it the southernmost point in all of the fifty United States. Archaeological records indicate that South Point, also known as Ka Lae ("the point" in Hawaiian), is one of the earliest Hawaiian settlements. People may have lived in the region since A.D. 124, although horses probably arrived more recently.
