Ecuador takes its name from its position smack dab atop the equator. The Incans ruled the nation during the 15th and 16th centuries until its emperor, Atahualpa, was captured by Spanish conquistadors in 1531. Atahualpa was famously ransomed for enough gold to fill a room and silver enough to fill two more. The Spaniards killed him anyway.
