Maui - Humpback Whales

Shooting Humpback Whales in Maui can become a photographic addiction. Breaching, spyhopping, head slapping, head lunging, pectoral fin displays, flute displays are simply mesmerizing to watch and a joy to photograph. Finding the right boat to view Humpbacks is also important. I am fortunate to know a captain who thinks like a photographer and provides a great whale watching and photographic experience. People don't just visit Hawaii's beaches to surf. They also swim, skimboard, play catch with their dogs, spike volleyballs, kayak, paddle canoes, jog, float, body surf, spearfish, build sand castles, talk story, check each other out, hula, juggle, dive, get married, fish, wrestle, pose, fly kites, and relax. Some of us also visit the beach to take pictures.

The Manhattan skyline is dominated by skyscrapers including the Empire State Building which was the world's tallest building until 1972. The Manhattan borough stays lit up throughout the night and becomes even more colorful during winter's holiday season. The ice rink at the Rockafeller Plaza is an iconic scene of holiday cheer as are the illuminated storefronts down 5th Avenue.

Surfers in Hawaii wait all year for winter when the changing weather brings out the biggest waves in the Northshore. The swells are powerful and majestic, which is appropriate since in the past surfing was reserved for Hawaiian royalty and was the sport of choice for King Kamehameha I. Nowadays, the only requirement to catch a wave is a board and the willingness to shake off the inevitable wipeout.

Notre Dame Football at Hawaii Bowl

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish pounded the Hawaii Warriors, 49-21, at the 2008 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve. The Notre Dame fans should be proud of their team. For the Hawaii fans, wait til next year. I was fortunate to sit in the first row behind the end zone. Here are a few photographs from the game.

Every year the best NFL players are rewarded with a trip to Hawaii to participate in the Pro Bowl. Less known is how NFL cheerleaders undergo a similar competitive process so that the best and brightest can work the sidelines alongside their more-physical counterparts.

Galapagos Islands

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was in large part formed by his observations on the Galapagos archipelago in 1835. The island chain is in the Pacific Ocean roughly 972 kilometers west of Ecuador and houses a variety of exotic species including the Blue-footed Booby which has large blue foot that are shown off during courtship. The Galapagos Islands are also home to the the only living tropical penguins, the appropriately named Galapagos Penguin.

Machu Picchu sits high in the Urubamba Valley of Peru with precipitous drops all around that can dizzy the head in a way that has nothing to do with the nearly 9,000 ft. elevation. A great deal of mystery surrounds the site because nobody can truly explain why the Incans built it. Fortunately, that lack does nothing to prevent appreciation for the small city's craftsmanship, exemplified in the Incan's ashlar style of construction in which blocks of stone are fitted together without mortar yet are secure enough that a knife's edge cannot penetrate the cracks.

Barack Obama Playing Golf in Hawaii 2009

On New Years Eve 2009, President Barack Obama played at the Mid-Pacific golf course during his Hawaii vacation. He played at the same course a year earlier. Unfortunately, he was playing after sunset and darkness came as he played the 17th and 18th holes. These were best photographs I was able to get under tough lighting conditions.
